Drawing Tutorials

Today we will learn how to create beautiful, breathtaking art. This does NOT mean hyper-realistic art like below:

Instead it means creating art that you are proud of. Remember beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. Now, of course, this guide won’t be for those who are super advanced! If you’re already there skip this guide and visit www.Instantlion.com.

So this guide will be all about creating portraits. Lets jump right into it!

 Who to draw?

First you need to understand whom you are going to draw. Are you going to draw yourself or someone else? The answer to this depends on your skill! If you are more advanced go for a self portrait. Otherwise take a photograph and draw someone else.

 How to start?

The first step you need to take is creating basic shapes. Visit this website to see what I’m talking about. Remember, all art comes down to is basic shapes. Once you have mastered the art of basic shapes you are good to go.

Now a lot of people think they have mastered the art, but they are very, very wrong. Most people haven’t got the slightest clue about drawing shapes. Drawing shapes is one of the most valuable skills to learn if you want to be an artist. For example, can you draw a circle without a compass? A perfect circle? Then you do NOT have mastery over shapes. If you cannot do this part I advise you to go back right now and work on creating shapes.

 First step

Now what we will focus on in this post is creating the eyes. Drawing a nice pair of eyes is a detailed slow process but it pays off dividends. Most individuals cannot paint a decent set of eyes for their lives. Once you are able to, you will be able to differentiate yourself from all the other wannabe artists out there. Lets see how.

The first thing about drawing and painting the eye is the outline. This is NOT just two lines. Remember, the tear duct at the end of an eye and then remember that the upper eyelid is actually quite thick. Most people create two lines and call it a day. Nope! The outline is important. I would recommend having two lines for the upper eyelid alone.

Next you want to create the prefect circle for the pupil, and then the perfect circle for the iris inside. Drawing this is very important because later on when we paint this we are going to highlight it. However, painting is for another day.

Lastly, we have in details to the eye. The eye is three dimensional. What does that mean? It means we have to draw and color the eye with different shades of light reflecting off of it! Most people forget this. The best way to learn this is to observe eyes in real life and see how light reflects off of it!

That is it for part 1 of our portrait tutorial! The next part will be out soon! We will focus on the nose!
